Why RUF????
The Purpose of Reformed University Fellowship = "Reaching students for Christ, Equipping Students to Serve".
We exist because our fathers in the faith in the Presbyterian Church in America sought to be obedient to the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and therefore established RUF.
"And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20, english standard version)
Campus ministry, like all "disciple-making", is given by Christ the King (the one with all authority) to his ordained servant, the church (he is speaking collectively to the apostles in Matt 28). This is why all RUF campus ministers are under the oversight and guidance of the local churches and we go to any campus who will welcome us that we might be a part of making disciples of "all nations". Disciple-making includes two components: 1) baptizing, and 2) teaching.
Baptizing is the category of gathering or "reaching" students. We go to the campus seeking non-religious outsiders to the faith and even skeptics who grew up in the church in order to give them a fair hearing of the truth claims of God and his word. We desire for the unconvinced to be made disciples, or justified, sinners being declared righteous on the basis of the work of Jesus applied to them is the good news we proclaim to all who will hear and put their trust in it.
Teaching is the category of perfecting or "equipping" students. We go to the campus seeking to care for the students from our church and all other believing churches of our King. Ephesians tells us that Jesus gave us pastors to teach that every part of the body of the church may be strengthened for the work of ministry. Sanctification, or being progressively made holy in the likeness of Jesus our Lord, obeying out of delight and thankfulness all of his commands it the purpose of all believers throughout life.
With You Always: Our greatest comfort is the promise in the final words of Jesus to his church, "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Jesus is truly spiritually present on the campus with RUF. We will spend all of this life growing and grasping the wonder of the miracle of God's presence with forgiven sinners. We long for the end of the age, when Jesus will return and all of our doubts, struggles, sins, and suffering will be ended as we will finally and forever, fully enjoy the presence of our God.
